At FCA Scotland we do all we can to make the application process as straightforward as it can be. It’s important to us that you’re always kept well informed and the process is stress-free.
It all starts with a chat over the phone. Then we’ll set a date for one of our fostering advisors to visit you at home so that we can get to know each other better. If you have any questions our fostering advisor is the person to ask. He or she will advise you of the process as well as the types of placements available and the next steps of your journey.
Our fostering advisor will write a report based on what you tell him or her. This information will be assessed by a Social Worker, who decides how best to proceed. You may then be asked to apply to become a foster carer, you’ll complete an application form and give your consent for us to complete certain checks and references.
Once we have your application form we undertake an assessment which helps us identify your skills and qualities.
The Social Worker responsible for your assessment will visit you and your family at home several times over a period of a few months to learn more about you. The type of things they’ll need to know more about will include your childhood, past relationships, work history, health, family and personal interests.
They’ll also carry out checks on your home safety and pets. It’s also necessary that you identify your support network. Your Social Worker will visit the family members and friends you’ve nominated as referees. Based on all of this information, a Form F document will be completed.
We’ll invite you to attend our ‘Journey to Foster training‘. This pre-approval course is designed to help get a real insight into fostering. You’ll get the chance to meet other potential carers from your area, as well as speak to current foster carers.
The application process involves a number of references and checks, including:
After completing the Form F we’ll help you prepare for the fostering panel. The panel is made up of a group of fostering professionals who will make a recommendation to the Agency Decision Maker regarding your approval as a foster carer.
Upon approval you’ll officially start on a journey of changing the lives of vulnerable young people for the better!
Altogether the process can take between four and six months.
