Rae and Andrew have been fostering with FCA Scotland since January 2015 after more than 20 years’ experience of being a nursery nurse and a childminder. The couple had thought about becoming foster carers for many years and felt the time was right for them now as their own children were adults and they were enjoying spending time with their grandchildren.
Rae and Andrew made the decision to take their enquiry further, they had lengthy discussions with family and friends – it was a friend of theirs who’d suggested FCA Scotland explaining they’d heard that FCA Scotland were the only agency she knew who could offer a complete package of support to their foster carers.
“From my initial contact the process went very smoothly; we both understood the reasons why the assessment process is so thorough but from the moment we were allocated our social worker to complete an assessment we knew we’d made the right choice with FCA Scotland. Our social worker was available at any time to ask questions or answer any queries we had, she provided all the help, support and advice we needed. She visited us at home and talked through what was expected of us as foster carers and how it could impact our life.
Everyone we had contact with went out of their way to put us at ease and prepare us to be strong, confident carers and when approved we were allocated our own dedicated supervising social worker who has offered us amazing support and again we’ve built up a great working relationship with her, we know she’s on the end of a phone at any time to guide and advise us.
We currently have two siblings under the age of 5 placed with us and we haven’t looked back since that day. The longer term plan is the children will be adopted and find a forever family, but they will remain with us in the meantime and although it will be hard when they leave we know it’s in the best interests of the children to be adopted. We’ve been able to offer stability, security and a great deal of care, support and guidance – this can never be underestimated and we’re proud we’ve been able to make a difference.
Whilst each day has its challenges, you’re always learning and you’re always motivated by the knowledge that you’re making such a difference. There’s no bigger reward than when I pick up the children and see their faces light up when they see me – it’s immeasurable! I really expected to have a day when I said why did I do this?! But I haven’t.
If you’re considering a career in fostering, go for it! Yes it’s full on, it can be challenging but it’s also rewarding and varied – no two days are ever the same”.
