Summer fun with the young people

The summer holidays are here for almost all of us, which signals one of the most enjoyable times of the year. School is on hold for…6 weeks, the nights are light and hopefully the days filled with sunshine.

To help you get the most out of the break, we’ve put together a list of activities that you could do with the children and young people, if you’re stuck for ideas. A great chance to bond with your young person and help entertain them over the holidays. We know it can be a difficult time for carers, making sure you have activities planned and entertaining restless young people can often turn in to a bit of a juggling act. So hopefully this list will help with the planning and keep your young people happy while also being able to enjoy a little bit of your own fun in the sun!

Activities to keep the children and young people entertained –

1.Go to the seaside – for many there’s nothing better than a trip to the beach in the summer. We’re all pretty lucky to live not far from the nearest coastline. Pack a picnic and make a day of it.

2.Go to the Safari Park; Blair Drummond Safari Park is in the Central Belt and a great family day out in Scotland.

3.Take advantage of the National Trust, they offer great days out and discounts for days out with the kids across Scotland.

4.Go swimming – check out your local pool. All kids love swimming and some pools have days with set activities, like inflatable obstacle courses.

5.Get the family out for a bike ride. A great activity for everyone to get involved in, helping the young people get plenty of exercise and burn off their energy.

6.Go camping – Many young people love camping, so dust the old tent off and let them sleep outside, even if it’s just in the garden.

7.Make your own pizzas – get the young people interested in cooking with make your own pizza night.

8.Read with your young person – reading is a perfect opportunity to sit down and relax and read some classic children books. Don’t forget your local library is a fantastic resource to get books to share with your young person at home.

9.Make some watermelon pops

1 large round slice of watermelon (cut 1 inch thick) 8 wooden lollipop sticks –

  • Cut the slice of watermelon into 8 triangle portion. Use a knife to make a slit in the skin of each portion and push the wooden stick into the slit.
  • Freeze on a plate or baking tray for 1 hour and enjoy. You can then transfer the pops into freezer bags to store.

10.Check out NetMums for things to do in your local area and they are a great help with rainy day activities and fun things to do in the summer.
