Why foster?

Becoming a foster carer is an amazing opportunity to give a child or young person the new start they need.

It takes a huge amount of bravery to start your fostering journey, but it really is one of the most rewarding things you can do. So when you foster with us, you’re supported every step of the way. You will always have the help, training and reassurance you need to help make a positive difference to a child’s life. We know there are challenges in fostering but by focusing on the benefits, it is easy to understand why we have so many long serving and successful foster carers.

Why do children need foster care?

There are many different reasons why children and young people are in foster care. Sometimes it’s because of a family illness, relationship problems or a family breakdown.

Other children may have faced a situation where they needed to be protected and their where their welfare is endangered. Our foster carers come into children’s lives when they’re needed the most, and offer them the support they need to build a brighter future.

Whilst each of their stories and journeys will be different, every child will have faced some degree of trauma and separation from their family.

Caring for children and young people

Many children in care have experienced neglect and physical, emotional or sexual abuse. All of them will have faced loss and separation from their birth family. As a result they’ll probably feel rejected, lonely and confused. Some will be withdrawn and find it hard to move on with their lives, while others may act aggressively.

That’s where you come in. As a foster carer your patience and understanding can help these children to overcome issues from their past. By staying calm under pressure and showing compassion during difficult times, you can help them to thrive. Here at FCA Scotland we understand that fostering children can sometimes be as tough as it is rewarding.
