Della and Sandy’s Fostering Story
Over the years, they’ve welcomed several children into their home – some for shorter stays, some for much longer. But no matter how long their young person is with them, every young person is made to feel part of the family from day one.
“As soon as they come through the door, they’re part of the family and treated like that. It’s our home. It’s their home.”
Proud Moments and Big Achievements
Della and Sandy say they’ve had “loads of best fostering moments.” One that stands out is supporting a boy who really struggled with school.
“I used to sit in the school reception with a sandwich while he was in there, just so he knew I was there. And then, when he started to go and be on his own – that was a great fostering moment.”
Another highlight was seeing a young person take part in his local Remembrance Day Parade.
“He carried the standard with the Scouts and absolutely loved it – just being part of something. He’s won awards at school and in Scouts too. Watching children achieve things and seeing their kindness – it makes you so proud.”
Support That Makes a Difference
Fostering isn’t always easy – and Della and Sandy are honest about that.
“Nobody tells you how emotional fostering is… It’s very different from raising your own children. And there have been some very difficult times.”
But they’ve never felt alone. Support from FCA Scotland has always been there when they’ve needed it.
“There’s so much support out there. Caroline’s been with us for a long time – she’s fantastic and so understanding. One of our young people says he loves her voice because it’s so gentle.”
“And there’s Lynn in Education – she’s amazing. I can ring her and say, ‘Look, this is happening,’ and she’ll try her hardest to help.”
Their Advice for New Foster Carers?
“Expect the unexpected,” says Sandy.
“Definitely expect the unexpected,” Della agrees. “And reach out for help when you need it.”
“We’ve had quite a few stay for a number of years. What’s important is that they’re happy – and that they feel at home.”
