“Anyone thinking of fostering, do it! 100% I’d back FCA Scotland.”

Angela, from Renfrewshire, has been fostering with FCA Scotland for 14 years. She currently cares for two young people on a long-term basis – one of whom has been with her for nearly 13 years.

Angela’s Story: “It’s been life-changing”

Angela’s fostering journey began after the loss of her mum. Reflecting on her life and a comment about not having children of her own, she came across an advert for fostering. “I thought, I’ll have a wee look,” she says. “Within 12 hours I’d heard from FCA, and that was it. I never looked back.”

A former soldier, Angela describes fostering as “life-changing” – not scary, but “an eye-opener to what children go through that you don’t realise.” For her, the rewards are in the everyday moments. “Just seeing them grow into their own person is quite something,” she says. One of those moments was helping her young person get ready for prom – “a wee tear moment.”

Another came when her young person, now 18, got a tattoo. “I asked her what it was for,” Angela says. “She said, ‘It’s the day I moved in here – the day my life changed.’ That took me by surprise. I was very moved and touched.”

Angela praises FCA Scotland’s support and community. “The support is amazing – there’s always someone to talk to. The matching, the training, the carer groups, the buddies – everything’s there to help make it as seamless as possible.” Her advice to anyone thinking about fostering? “Do it. 100% I’d back FCA Scotland.”
